Software developers are in-demand like never before. In fact, there are more than 115,000 job postings for software developers and engineers across the United States, according to a recent CompTIA Tech Jobs Report.
At the same time, WalletHub found that the role of Software Engineer is the best entry-level job available today!
How WalletHub Measured the Best First Jobs
WalletHub compared 108 entry-level occupations across three key dimensions: immediate opportunity, growth potential, and job hazards. They then measured these dimensions using 12 metrics, including average starting salary, projected job growth by 2030, and typicality of working over 40 hours a week. The weighted average across all metrics calculated each job’s total score and rank.
Here are the rankings, showing Software Engineer as No. 1:
- Software Engineer, Score: 81.07
- Electrical Engineer, Score: 80.3
- Engineer, Score: 79.92
- Systems Engineer, Score: 79.68
- Industrial Engineer, Score: 79.51
Of course, it’s not just Software Engineers that are sought after. The overall tech market is growing across industries and across geographies.

- No. of Tech Job Postings: 70,377

New York City (+3,571), Chicago (+1,912), Atlanta (+1,379), Philadelphia (+1,279) and Charlotte (+1,204) are all hot for tech workers, with the largest month-over-month increases in job postings.
